I always wanted to be a professional athlete as kid, but didn’t have the hand eye coordination for baseball which was my first love. I turned to triathlon after running at University of Portland. I had good results, but knew I would be better suited to triathlon as I already possessed a cycling background from high school. Entering the sport in 2009, I realized how difficult the level of competition was and wondered if it was the right decision. Amazingly, I won the ITU Duathlon World Championships that Fall which confirmed the decision to switch to multisport. Through my participation with Athletes in Action I learned that my own achievement and glory in sports is fleeting in comparison to glorifying God. Now I’m training and racing for something greater than myself; to glorify God and help others know the love of Christ. When not training or racing, you’ll see me coaching local marathoners and triathletes, mentoring college students through my involvement with Cru, a spiritual resource for college students. If you have questions for Matt, want to discuss training, God, or life, I would love a personal email at mattsheeks@gmail.com.
